Supposedly charming home of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Salzburg, Austria

Salzburg

Salzburg

Salzburg is Austria’s fourth biggest city and is considered by many the most charming of them all. Its historical center is part of Unesco’s world heritage sites since 1997. It is full of massive squares and impressive churches.

The Cathedral is located in the between three squares Residenzplatz, Kapitelplatz and Domplatz. It was first built in 774, rebuilt in 1181 after a big fire and in the seventeenth century it took the shape that is known today as a massive Baroque Cathedral. This is the place where Mozart was baptized and its baptismal fount can still be seen inside. Basically the whole city is about Mozart: Mozart Square, Mozart’s birth place, souvenirs with Mozart, mini pianos, etc.

We visited the town in a gloomy weather, it was a weekday afternoon and really cloudy. Maybe that’s why it did not impress us at all. It seemed empty and lifeless.

From almost everywhere it’s possible to see the Hohensalzburg Castle on the very top of the hill. You can go up by a special funicular for a couple of euros or walk up the hill. We decided to walk and enjoy the views on the way. Standing on one of the viewpoints, we were asked by two American women, mother and daugther most probably, if we know who is standing on the golden ball down in the center. Indeed, there was a strange gold monument that we passed by next to the Mozart Square. The older lady was laughing claiming that she is sure that the man standing on the ball is… Barack Obama. Strange idea. We ignored them but later on we eventually went back to the ball and it definitely was not Obama 🙂

We didn’t have a chance to enter the castle chambers as it was already closed, but we were able to walk around and see the views over the city. We went back to the old town, wandered around the baroque streets, crossed the river and followed one of the main streets with many shops. Again, everything seemed gloomy and dull. It’s a pity we didn’t have more time and a better weather to visit this supposedly charming town.
