The Plan

Planning the whole thing was quite enjoyable. Once we were 100% sure we were going to live the adventures of our lives it was just a matter of writing down every place we wanted to visit, estimate times in each place, times between places, budgeting food, transportation, sleeping, visas and leisure costs.

We knew we wanted to travel by land as much as possible but were not worried if we had to catch a flight every now and then if that meant to help us get through our plans.

Our travel will have 3 stages:

1. Europe – Western and Central Europe

2. Southeast Europe, Asia (Central Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia)

3. South America

  1. West and Central Europe

The first month of our trip we decided to do by car. We will be starting the trip in Sanguedo, Renato’s hometown in mid May. Than, we will go by car to Poland, taking around 3 weeks on the way to visit some places in west and central Europe (Portugal, Spain, Andorra, France, Monaco, Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany and Poland). In Cracow, Poland we will stay for 1 week to take care of some more paperwork, vaccines, documents and what not. The backpacking part of the trip will start here.

2. South-East Europe and Asia (Central Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia)

From Poland we are planning to go south (Slovakia, Austria and Slovenia), pass through the Balkan countries (Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, Greece), then Turkey, Georgia, Azerbaijan and Iran. In the beginning, we wanted to do the whole Europe and Asia part of the trip by land only, however, we realized that it won’t be that easy.

First of all, the visas to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan are at least 50-60 euros each. Secondly, traveling there is not the cheapest. Of course, it must be interesting to see the countries that are usually not in the typical top 10 list of places to go, but we need to think about our budget.

So, instead of going by land through the vast Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, we will take a plane from Iran to India. Next, we will enter Nepal and hopefully will find our way overland to Tibet and China. The next step would be Indochina. Plans are to start in Vietnam, following Cambodia, Laos and Thailand from where we will cross to Myanmar. After we will go south to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and finally East Timor.

3. South America – the plan is not determined yet, but surely with time something will appear here.
